This is the hallmark of Zakopane and at the same time the most characteristic mountain massif in the entire Tatra Mountains, rising to a height of 1894 m above sea level and stretching 2.7 km long.
Its main peak, Wielki Giewont, is the highest summit in the Western Tatras located entirely within Poland.
There is also a legend associated with this mountain called "About the Sleeping Knights" who wait asleep in the Giewont cave. Their sleep will be interrupted "... when bad times come for the country."
Several trails lead from Kościelisko to Giewont:
- The shortest – the yellow trail from Gronik through the Valley of Mała Łąka to Kondracka Pass, then further on the blue trail. Walking time from Gronik to the pass: 2:45 h, ↓ 2:05 h Walking time from the pass to the summit of Giewont: 30 min, ↓ 20 min
- Our recommended full-day trip is the red trail from the Kościeliska Valley through Czerwone Wierchy to Kopa Kondracka, then the yellow trail to Kondracka Pass, from there the blue trail to Giewont. The return can be done via the yellow trail to the Valley of Mała Łąka or the blue trail to Kondratowa Valley, and then through Kalatówki Glade to Kuźnice. From Kuźnice return by mini bus to Kościelisko. This trip can also be taken exactly in the reverse direction.
- The blue trail from Kuźnice to Giewont is the gentlest approach of all available.
